The Melanocephala Project was born out of a shared passion for wildlife conservation and a pressing need to protect one of the most enigmatic and endangered snakes in Central America and in the world: the Black-headed Bushmaster (Lachesis melanocephala). This elusive viper, found only in the rainforests of southern Costa Rica, is critically understudied due to its rarity and secretive behavior.

Founded as a collaboration between CRWild and the Bushmaster Conservation Project, the initiative seeks to close that knowledge gap by conducting long-term ecological research directly in the species’ natural habitat—Rancho Quemado, in the heart of the Osa Peninsula. The project combines cutting-edge scientific methods with strong community involvement to foster sustainable conservation and coexistence.
