The town of gold, historically inhabited by poachers and gold diggers, is now an example of a successful community-driven eco-tourism initiative. ACODOBRARTI, the local association operates all tours in the area.

El Tigre is a small village located northwest of Puerto Jimenez and is known for its wealth in gold and history. The two arms of the Tigre River nourish this place with life and the precious mineral that has been extracted by hand for many years.

On the tour, you will visit the Tigre area of Corcovado National Park. The trail is a loop of approximately 8 Km with steep hills and very active hiking. This area is covered by primary forest, where you can visit waterfalls, viewpoints, natural pools and tunnels used to extract gold.

At dusk, you will do a night tour to look for amphibians and reptiles. This package includes accommodation and 3 meals at a cozy home with a local family departing and going back to Pto. Jimenez.

Day 1
Half-day at El Tigre

01:00 p.m.Transport from Puerto Jimenez to Dos Brazos.
02:00 p.m. Arrival in Dos Brazos and a relaxing afternoon (for an extra, you can add a Gold Panning or a Birdwatching Tour).
06:00 p.m. Dinner.
07:00 p.m. Night hike.
09:00 p.m. Bedtime.

Day 2
Day Tour to Corcovado National Park

06:30 a.m. Breakfast.
07:00 a.m. Meet with the guide at the bamboo building to start your Day Tour at Corcovado.
07:30 a.m. Start hiking up the "Rompe Pechos"
10:00 a.m. Arrival at the look-out
12:00-2:00 p.m. Arrival at the accommodation for lunch. End of the tour.
02:30 p.m. Transport from Dos Brazos to Puerto Jimenez.

 

  • 1-2 liters of water (single-use plastic bottles are not allowed inside national parks).
  • Snacks (mixed nuts, dry fruits, cereal/granola bars, and cookies).
  • Hiking shoes (protected, comfortable, and preferably waterproof).
  • Light and quick dry clothes, hat or cap, swimsuit, raincoat and sandals.
  • Passport (it can be a copy or a clear picture).
  • Sunblock.
  • Bug repellent.
  • Flashlight.
  • Towel.
  • Waterproof bag.
  • Hiking backpack.

Homestay at El Tigre

El Tigre community invites you to stay at their cozy local homes. Zulay and Ligia, your hostesses, will provide an unforgettable rural experience. The one night accomodation at el Tigre is clean and simple. You can have your own private room with shared or private bathroom  and finish your day with a massage from Zulay (not included in the price) while hearing the river run and the birds sing. You will feel like part of the family and share with them three delicious typical meals (included).

This small town, with scenic beauty, is a great birder destination, offering dozens of species daily, and many trails to explore. During dry season, the place is perfect to cool off in the wild waters of the river surrounded by primary forest trees.
